Maarten graduated as a biologist in 2004 at the Radboud University of Nijmegen, with specializations in molecular and theoretical biology. He has worked in the technical group of the Max Planck Institute of Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen until 2006. Subsequently Maarten has been working in the pharmacovigilance department of Synthon BV as a Pharmacovigilance Support officer and at MSD as a Safety Data Specialist.

In 2015 Maarten joined BFC where he is primarily involved in the Pharmacovigilance activities.
